Exchange Programs
Chiben Gakuen Exchange Program
Our relationship with our sister school Chiben Gakuen Wakayama is over 25 years old! (Old enough that some of the teachers at Chiben actually went to TJ when they were high school students!)
Every year (with exceptions), a group of 10-12 students from Chiben come to TJ in late February to mid March! They then live with and go to school with TJ students, as well as get to know the TJ community! Then from late June through July, the host group goes to Japan every other year, and the whole process reverses! This is probably the highlight of the program, and it’s one of the best ways to take your language and cultural knowledge to the next level while making unforgettable high school memories!
Some of the stuff we’ve done on the Japan trip includes:
-
Climbing Mount Fuji
-
Exploring Akihabara, Tokyo’s anime/electronics hub
-
Going to hot springs
-
Exploring temples in Kyoto
-
Going to Universal Studios Japan in Osaka
-
Staying overnight at a Wakayama temple

Global Classmates Exchange Program
Students in AP Japanese and Japanese 5 get to interact with students in Japan virtually through this online exchange program!
Global Classroom is a virtual exchange we have with a Japanese English class or English club abroad! Our Global Classroom sister school for the time being is Takamatsu Nishi High School. We showcase different parts about American and Japanese daily life, culture, etc. There’s also a souvenir exchange where we exchange gifts from each of our respective countries! AP Japanese and Japanese 5 students do this exchange during their first semester.
Super Science HS Exchange Program
In Japan, the equivalent of schools like TJ are called Super Science High Schools by the Japanese government. Every year, a group of three students from various science high schools, mainly Yokohama Science Frontier High School, come to TJ to present the research they've been working on throughout the school year.

KAKEHASHI Project
Come to Japan on one free trip, all expenses paid for by the Japanese government.

The KAKEHASHI Project is an exchange program fully sponsored by the Japanese government. Students immerse themselves fully in Japanese culture for a week with a 2-3 day homestay and cultural activities highlighting regional traditions.
